LILONGWE, Malawi – A busy road. A packed red clay path. School children commuting. Three Airmen helping. This describes an unlikely meeting between three Airmen of the 908th Aeromedical Staging Squadron and the 302nd Aeromedical Staging Squadron and Malawian citizens at the Partners in Hope Medical Centre, nearly 30 minutes from the bustling Lilongwe city center. Together, the Airmen impacted the lives of many Malawian citizens by providing much needed dental treatment.
The Airmen debated over whether or not to cross the road out of concern for causing the children to be late for school, but ultimately decided the opportunity was too good to pass up.
According to Staff Sgt. Amy L. Montgomery, of the 908th Aeromedical Staging Squadron in Montgomery, Ala., there seemed to be a mutual curiosity between both the Airmen and the children.
“When we crossed the road it was just amazing how they approached us and wanted to be right up on us and to have their picture taken,” said Master Sgt. Teresa J. Morgan, a dental non-commissioned officer in charge of the 908th Aeromedical Staging Squadron.
“All the kids came and wanted to be a part of what was happening. They were so happy,” said Col. Sheldon “Shel” Omi, commander of the 302nd Aeromedical Staging Squadron. “It was just amazing because all of us were like magnets. A lot of them just wanted to shake my hand. It was so much fun.”
According to Omi, of Denver, Colo., it was the smiles and laughter from the bustling group Malawian of children that made him smile. Impacted by the reaction of the schoolchildren, he and his teammates crossed the road determined to bring smiles to the lives of others as well.
The Airmen are visiting Malawi as part of a joint humanitarian medical exercise called MEDREACH 11. Taking time out of their already hectic exercise schedules, the team carved out a few hours to help patients at the clinic.
Walking into the clinic lobby, the Airmen were greeted with the songs sung by a mostly Malawian medical staff. Drawn to the gathering, they listened in on a brief meeting led by Partners in Hope Director Dr. Perry Jansen, who says that while funding for his clinic is important, the connection between volunteers and patients is key.
“I think for many Malawians there is not a face or an experience to strengthen the existing connection through the funds received,” said Jansen. “Money is great, but I think that sending people and having people actually meet with Malawians is a great idea. It personalizes the impact that America has in Malawi to individual experiences and I am sure that people will tell of those experiences. I think it’s a very welcomed thing.”
Partners in Hope Medical Centre is a multi-faceted clinic that provides X-ray, ultrasound, laboratory, physical therapy, and dentistry. There is also a HIV clinic that provides medical and dental support patients suffering from HIV at no charge and a private clinic that offers anything except surgery and trauma care at a small fee.
For many Malawians, the ability to see a dentist could mean the difference between living a functional life and being debilitated by constant pain. For the staff at Partners in Hope, Omi and his dental technicians arrived just at the right time.
“If someone has a bad tooth or an infected tooth it could affect their jaw and affect their whole well-being,” said Omi. “They wouldn’t be able to chew, some people can’t sleep at night, and some people can’t go to work because they have a bad tooth. It can really affect their lives.”
While a large part of the treatments focused on cleanings, fillings, and extractions, each patient received an individual assessment from the dental staff to determine the best course of action. Led by Dr. Themba Nyrienda, Omi and his team aimed to care for and help as many people as possible.
“I had a problem with my teeth and one of them had become damaged,” said Dorcus Mnthambala, a local Malawian citizen. “The doctor saved my one tooth and then was able to clean the rest of them. I am happy, so happy.”
The marked appreciation expressed by the patients continually motivated the Air Force providers to do their very best. Thanks to the efforts of the Airmen, Nyrienda said Partners in Hope had never treated that many people in one day.

Necessary Heartbreak

An extraordinary journey back in time shows a struggling single dad that the faith he’s lost is still alive—and stronger than ever. . . .Michael Stewart has weathered his share of hardships: a troubled childhood, the loss of his mother, even the degradation of living on the city streets. Now he’s raising his teenaged daughter, Elizabeth, on his own and doing the best he can at work and at home. But he’s turned his back on his faith—that is, until the morning Michael and Elizabeth volunteer for a food pantry at their local church. While storing boxes in the basement, they step through a mysterious door . . . and find themselves in first-century Jerusalem during the tumultuous last week of Jesus Christ’s life. It is a dangerous and violent place, where doing what your heart tells you is right can get you imprisoned—or worse—and they are thankful to take refuge with a kind widow. But when they come face-to-face with Judas Iscariot and the condemned Christ himself, Michael realizes that before they can escape Jerusalem, he must experience history’s most necessary and shattering heartbreak—and that pain and loss must happen if Michael is to be set free: to live, love, and reclaim the blessings he has in the present day.

Germline

GermLine

In gene therapy, the damaged or defective chromosomes of an individual patient are corrected by the addition of new genes introduced into the patient's DNA. This is a dangerous and controversial technique, on the cutting edge of medical science. "GermLine" gene therapy is even more radical. By altering the reproductive cells, the germ cells, of a single individual, you can forever change the genetic makeup of that person—and all of his or her future descendants! But who should control such an awesome power? The government? The medical establishment? Or a hidden conspiracy of the rich and powerful? Dr. Kevin Kincaid, a brilliant scientist whose life has been scarred by personal tragedy, is on the verge of a major breakthrough. After years of research and experimentation, he has developed a biological vector capable of introducing new genes into the germ cells of unborn children while they are still in their mothers' wombs. With this vector, doctors will be able to eradicate genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis and Down syndrome for all generations to come. But Kincaid's discovery also raises the specter of wholesale genetic engineering, of changing the very nature of humanity itself, which attracts the attention of dangerous forces, including a ruthless government agency, an international conspiracy of wealthy industrialists, and radical terrorists who will stop at nothing, including murder, to keep Kincaid's breakthrough from transforming the world as we know it. Soon the targeted scientist finds himself at the center of a covert war to control the future of human evolution. Betrayed and deceived by those closest to him, he can trust no one-not even a mysterious woman who bears an uncanny resemblance to his long-dead wife. . . . Endangered Rare Crocodile Was

Endangered Rare Crocodile Was Found in Florida

An endangered rare crocodile, one of the animal's reptilian cousins was found near the community pond in Florida woman?s backyard in St. Petersburg, Florida, shocking residents of a gated community over the weekend.

In fact, alligators are a common sight in parts of Florida with about 1,500 crocodiles, mostly found in the Florida Keys area, some 300 miles south of St. Petersburg. However, crocodiles are too seldom to be found in some areas like St. Petersburg that an official didn?t initially believe what Shondra Farner said about spotting the endangered rare crocodile near the community pond in her backyard. "He said, 'No, ma'am, you have an alligator,' and I said, 'No, I know the difference.'" she said. "That big boy was just about 8 feet from our patio? It's terribly scary looking. And fast." His eyes are set differently, but his tail is the giveaway, because they have these very high peaks on the tail.? Before, Shondra Farner saw crocodiles on a trip to Costa Rica and recognized the animal's narrower, more triangular snout. American alligators not only have wider, more rounded snouts but they also don't like the brackish and salt waters that crocs can live in. What was sitting on their back lawn was no alligator.

Because endangered crocodiles cannot be killed, experts had the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission set up a cage trap filled with beef loin with the aim of capturing the giant reptile. If this eight-foot was the same endangered crocodile that was seen south of St. Petersburg in 2008, it surely has been living on the ducks in the water in order to survive. Moreover, officials are planning to implant a magnet into the animal to disorient it before releasing it into Tampa Bay to prevent it from returning to neighborhoods. Still, she warned everyone not to feed or touch these alligators or crocodiles and to keep pets away from them.

A rare eight-foot crocodile was spotted laying on the bank of a lake in a gated community in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Eleven Ways To Make Money

Eleven Ways to Make Money Fast When You're Desperate

You've heard the familiar mantra, "Start your own business!", but sometimes you're so desperate for money you don't have time to start your own business and wait for the returns. You need to make quick cash! If you're desperate for money, what are some things you can do to make money fast?

While I'm not a fan of get rich quick schemes or starting an endeavor without thoroughly researching it, I want to suggest some ideas you might be able to do to make quick cash in the short term:

1. Have a yard sale.

Go through your house and closets and weed everything you don't absolutely need. Most people have far too many things they never use and will never use again. Organize and price them in preparation for a large yard sale. Display your items as attractively as possible. Advertise everywhere you can with large, easy to see flyers. If you can afford it, post an ad in your local newspaper. A one day yard sale can often produce a significant amount of money.

2. Take back any recent large purchases you can.

Do you need money because you've overspent on luxury items recently? Now's, the time to return items to the store for which you still have the receipt. If you're in a desperate situation, you're not going to be able to make use of those luxury items anyway.

3. Write an article.

You can get paid for writing an informative article on the topic of your choosing at a website called Associated Content. Articles must be at least 400 words in length and well written without grammatical or spelling errors. Once your article is approved, which usually takes 2-3 days, you'll be paid within 3 days. This can be an excellent way to make quick cash if you're a good writer.

4. Deliver new vehicles to dealerships.

It's not well known, but large specialty vehicles such as vans, limousines, and RV's aren't delivered to dealerships on a truck. They're driven to dealerships by part time entrepreneurs like you. You're paid by the mile and then give money for air transportation back home. Plus, there's
no need for a commercial driver's license, although some states require a chauffeur's license which is obtained by passing a written test. This can be a relaxing way to generate cash relatively quickly.

5. Mow some lawns.

Yes, I know it's low tech, but there's a real demand for lawn care these days as people have little time to do it themselves. Find an attractive neighborhood and market your services door to door. You can get paid for this service the same day.

6. Play an instrument.

Do you play an instrument or sing? Visit some local restaurants and bars and see if you can entertain their customers for a few evenings. If they resist, offer to do it for a free meal the first night. You should be able to make some money via tips despite not getting paid. Who knows? This may lead to a long term gig.

7. Sell something inexpensive door-to-door to businesses.

Consider selling inexpensive items that businesses use everyday and frequently run out of such as pens, pencils, erasers etc. You should be able to get these items cheaply and sell them at an inexpensive price. Businesses will likely purchase some from you because the items are not costly and they want to be accommodating.

8. Be a guinea pig.

Did you know you can get paid to participate in medical studies testing out new drugs and treatments? Some of these studies pay fairly well, but may require frequent visits to a clinic or even an overnight hospitalization. One disadvantage is you may not get paid until the study is completed. If you're desperate for money, make sure you sign up for a short study. Do an internet search for "paid medical studies".

9. Donate plasma.

If you're free of infectious diseases and are healthy, you can get paid to donate your plasma. This is a relatively quick and relaxing procedure, but does require a needle stick. You'll relax in a comfortable chair and watch television or listen to music as your plasma is prepared and collected. You'll receive immediate payment which varies by location.

10. Wash some windows.

Find a janitor supply store in your area. Buy some squeegees, a brush and rags, a pail with rollers attached, and some some ammonia and vinegar. Drive to your nearest outdoor mall and ask the first store if you can wash their windows. Offer to do so at a low price in order to establish some credibility. After completing the first store's windows, move on to other stores. Mention that you washed windows in the first store and the owners were very pleased. This could turn into a business with employees, but, until then, it's a good fast cash generator.

11. Run a weekend sale.

There are loads of people who would love to have a yard sale, but don't have time to tag all the items and set it up. Offer to do the work for them for a percentage of the sales, say 25% or so. You would organize the items, display them, and be there throughout the sale to collect money. This is another quick cash generator that has long term potential.

These are just a few of the many ideas you can use to make quick cash. I'll be following up with more quick money making ideas in the future. Stay tuned!

Most Dangerous Jobs In

Most Dangerous Jobs in the World

Millions of people in the world often have to risk their lives everyday protecting us, fighting for us and helping us when we are hurt or injured. To be specific, according to the AFL-CIO data, occupational injuries claim the 15 fatalities each day, and the following jobs are considered the most dangerous ones in the world:

1. Pilots and airline employees

The number of fatalities for airline employees was extremely high in 2006 due to an August 2006 Comair crash in Lexington, Kentucky, which caused 47 deaths including the pilot and multiple passengers. However, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 215 airline-related fatalities all together with 44 accidents related to multiple deaths.

2. Fishermen

Men and women who work in the fishing industry often put their lives at risk because they have to battle forces of nature including strong storms and extreme temperatures. Moreover, with a higher death rate of 86.4 deaths per 100,000 workers, fishing is listed in the most dangerous jobs in America

3. Structural construction workers

The United Steelworkers union reports that deaths among structural construction workers are increasing as owners and managers try to cut costs. Besides that, the most common cause of death among them can be resulted from falling according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

4. Loggers

People who work in the logging industry have to be faced with the expected dangers related to cutting down giant trees. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA), one of the most dangerous situations is a lodged or hung tree, which happens when a cut tree does not fall all the way to the ground but gets caught against another tree. AS a result, a recent repost indicates that timber industry can result in 92.4 deaths per 100,000 reported in 2006.

5. Power-line technicians

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 350 workers including those who install or repair lines are killed annually due to contact with electric currents or power lines. Meanwhile, other incidents have been caused by employees who fell while working on power lines high above the ground. Consequently, fatalities have risen recently among electricians.

6. Waste management employees

Because waste and recycling collectors often drive the trucks, their biggest threat involves road and highway crashes. Moreover, the frequency of contact with hazardous wastes is an additional risk.

How Do I Conduct A

Question by Maddy: How do I conduct a food bank at a high school in California?
I'm a senior, and for my senior project I am putting together a food bank. The food collected is donated food from other students, and the remains of the cafeteria food. It is all packaged, so there's no worry. The food is to to go the needy students, of this campus. However, keeping every individual under consideration, how do I go about this food bank without offending any of the students? I'm sure a few would like to remain anonymous, because they'd be too embarrassed to publicize their necessity for food. So, how do I make it anonymous? Any tips, or ideas?

Best answer:

Answer by Mike S
To be honest, I'm not sure you can. Once you publicize the food bank as being available, you almost certainly have to have someone supervising the room containing all the food to be sure no one trashes the place or contaminates the food. If just one person is in charge, that's probably about the closest you can get to anonymity. The other option would be to offer the food online (using the high school computers) and the needy student could indicate an address for it to be shipped (the student could use his own home, a relative's, or a friend's place)... bottom line... you really wouldn't know who would benefit in this case.

Oppression Thru Ageism

Oppression thru Ageism

Ageism pertains to prejudice of society against older adults. Society seems to have a negative view on aging adults. Ageism was first coined in 1969 by Robert Butler, then director of the National Institute on Aging, to refer to discrimination practiced against older persons on the basis of age. Butler and other social critics pointed out that prejudiced, dismissive, and harmful acts and attitudes are directed towards old people by both individuals and institutions.

Our fondness for youth had contributed to a slanted notion about aging. This is evident in the recent popular trends of plastic surgery. Some people hold on to youth or want to attain youth-looking features at all cost even going under the knife. They are willing to take an enormous amount of pain and inconvenience in an apparent bid to preserve youthfulness. This mind-set has contributed to the view that aging is an undesirable state to be in.

It is not surprising then that old people experience some form of prejudice or oppression. Oppression due to ageism is evident in the language, depiction in media and even humor. Expressions such as ?over the hill? or ?old fuddy-duddy? often attach a negative impression aging. We seem to associate aging with impotency or incompetence. This is apparent in workplaces where aging employees are replaced by younger people because they are perceived to be less competent in handling the job.

The Destructive Impact of Ageism

Practice of ageism is often apparent in three major areas: prejudice in the workplace, inequality in the opportunities in healthcare system, and social prejudice. Old people are viewed as sick, sexless, ugly, powerless, and mentally deficient which lead to unfair treatment in the aforementioned three areas.

An obvious case of ageism in the workplace occur when older workers are not hired or promoted because employers often believe that they will be less flexible and less competent than younger employees. Businesses main goal is to earn profits, younger labor also implies cheaper labor as compared to their older, more experienced counterparts.

Heath care providers also restrict or limit opportunities for older people by ignoring or dismissing chronic complaints of the elderly to focus on the health needs of younger patients.

Finally, our culture often provides more emphasis to youth. Due to this odd preference, age has become a source of shame, ridicule, and disgust.

Charlotte, N.C. (PRWEB) January 30, 2012

A collaborative effort between Johnson C. Smith University and Charlotte School of Law will enable students to attend three years at Johnson C. Smith University and three years at Charlotte School of Law to earn a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree and a Juris Doctor degree. The 3+3 program has been approved by the Southern Associations of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to begin in fall 2012.

High-performing JCSU students with an interest in law will be recruited to be a part of the program. A special information session to outline the expectations and requirements will be held for students and parents and an advising agreement signed prior to a student entering the program. Candidates are required to have a minimum SAT score of 900 and a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Students will follow a curriculum pace that allows them to complete JCSU degree requirements minus the major electives. Those include JCSU?s introduction to legal studies and LSAT preparation. At the end of their junior year, qualified students may enter the law program at CharlotteLaw. Participating first-year students at CharlotteLaw must meet minimum GPA requirements to remain in good academic standing. Full credits required for graduation from Johnson C. Smith must be completed by the end of August following the first year of law school. Graduates from the program will receive two degrees ? one from Johnson C. Smith University and one from Charlotte School of Law.

?Johnson C. Smith University endeavors to produce graduates who are able to communicate effectively, think critically, and learn independently as well as collaboratively,? said JCSU President Ronald Carter. ?We appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with Charlotte School of Law in a program that combines a quality liberal arts education with a concentrated study in the field of law, so our graduates will be well prepared for successful careers.?

The collaborative relationship between the two institutions may include joint research activities and publications, applications for research funding, co-sponsorship of seminars, and sharing of course materials and curriculum.

?We are continuously looking for new ways to improve the post-graduate academic experience for our students and we?ve found that in this 3+3 partnership with Johnson C. Smith University,? said Denise Spriggs, interim dean of Charlotte School of Law. ?Students who relish the opportunity to challenge themselves will find that in our partnership with Charlotte?s oldest and most-established university.?
